CMAA Distinguished Owner Award Given to Larry Smith, P.E., F.ASCE

by Martin Farber, P.E.

On October 8, at their annual National Conference, the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) honored ASCE Sacramento Section Senior Director Larry Smith, P.E., F. ASCE, with its Distinguished Owner Award. The award is presented to a construction owner who has made a significant contribution to CMAA and the profession.

Larry Smith is chief of the Construction Branch, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District. He started his engineering career in 1971 with the Utah Department of Transportation. In 1974 he joined the Army Corps of Engineers. He has held numerous positions during his 33 years with the Corps. Smith has been a strong proponent and advocate of CMAA’s professional development and standards of practice activities, and an active participant in CMAA’s Northern California Chapter.

The CMAA award is only the most recent addition to our Senior Director's remarkable record of public service. Larry is also a volunteer fire fighter, and a California State Fire Marshall Certified Instructor. He served as the Chair of the highly-successful 2007 Sacramento Levee Conference, and is a leader of SAME (Society of American Military Engineers). Most recently, Larry was named as the winner of ASCE's Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award.
