Leading vs. Managing: Developing Skills
The April 2006 PE Magazine continues its "Leading Insight" by giving ideas on developing leaders and managers. Do you know the biggest problem related with developing leaders? Again, as a NSPE Member you have full access to the entire article and many other professional resources to developing your personal leadership skills.
Firms place a greater emphasis on developing thier managers than their leaders. "No one talks about leadership. No one focuses on it." Building new leaders requires companies to be dedicated to the process, and it also requires current leaders to actively develop new ones.
If your company is expecting someone to be in charge of a staff of professionals yet expect that person to 100% billable they are missing the point that that values of leadership and managment take both time and money.
Perhaps the easiest way for managers to become leaders is getting involved with a community organization, or professional organization such as NSPE, ASCE or SAME. This involvement exposes future leaders to a range of leadership models and tests their skills without risking damage to their careers. Your feedback and opinions are welcome.
Post Award RFP Implementation Workshop
The Construction Communities of Practice is conducting a 5-day workshop in Kansas City, MO to develop an implementation guide that defines roles and responsibilities of the Government, Design-Build Contractor, and third parties after award of a Design-Build Contract.
The goal is to develop a draft Engineering Construction Bulletin (ECB) that defines USACE role and contract administration procedures during construction for design-build (fast-track) construction.
Stay tuned for an Article of The Month summarizing the results and progress from this workshop.
