"Still Battling the Inland Sea: California’s Complex Flood Control Issues"
24 - 26 July 2007 Holiday Inn Hotel, Sacramento, California
Join more than 300 engineering, environmental and construction professionals at the “SAME / ASCE 2007 Levee Conference”, where today’s leaders will address tomorrow’s issues.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) invite you to save the dates for a milestone workshop to discuss solutions for California’s complex flood damage reduction issues.
This conference will consist of plenary sessions with policy and technical breakout workshops. It will provide a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and share technical knowledge. Speakers will include elected officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Water Resources, local flood control agencies, renowned flood control experts, and leaders of the architect and engineering community. The conference will also include a presentation on the IPET findings from Hurricane Katrina and a presentation by the Dutch Delegation.
More information about this highly anticipated conference will be available soon. The conference committee is also seeking interested parties to present or participate in panel discussions on technical or policy issues relevant to this topic. Potential themes and topics of the conference include:
• Lessons of History with levee systems,
• Planning, design and construction of levees,
• Levee policies and programs,
• Levees operation and maintenance, and
• Emergency Preparedness.
Background
The Sacramento Valley was once a region where an inland sea a hundred miles long regularly formed during the rainy season. Today we are living in these floodplains contained by thousands of miles of levees.
The Flood Prevention Bond Act of 2006 provides funding to rebuild the levees in the Central Valley, improve flood control in other areas, build bypasses to divert flood waters, and map areas vulnerable to flooding.
Numerous Federal, State, and Local agencies are learning how to apply lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina to the Sacramento Valley and the California Levee System. The lessons learned undoubtedly will influence our engineering & environmental communities’ responses to life along the rivers.
This conference will increase awareness and skills needed to ultimately develop solutions between the competing interests and diverse stakeholders within our region.
