Peers in the nation’s oldest national engineering society have selected Larry. J. Smith, P.E., a “Fellow” in the organization, a distinction afforded only a fraction of its membership.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), founded in 1852, represents more than 137,685 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, 6,780 of whom have been elevated to the grade of “Fellow.” ASCE Fellows are considered the life-blood of the society. They are the mentors and creative thinkers who pass on their knowledge and solutions to the rest of the membership base, the civil engineering profession, and the general public.
To qualify as an ASCE Fellow, a civil engineer must be an active member of the society for at least ten years and must be a legally registered engineer or land surveyor. The member also must be qualified to direct, plan or design engineering works, had have had responsible charge of important industrial business, construction, educational, editorial, research or engineering society activity. Additionally, a civil engineer must be nominated by an organization entity, two ASCE Fellows, and an ASCE Society member or Fellow.
Applicants submit completed applications including their digest of achievements to the Membership Application Review Committee. A complete curriculum vitae and biographical sketch is included with the application.
The Membership Application Review Committee is comprised of 10 Fellow Grade Members who meet once each month to review scheduled applications. Advancement requires unanimous approval by the Membership Application Review Committee.
In bestowing the grade of Fellow on Mr. Smith and other ASCE members, ASCE's Past President Delon Hampton pointed out that "the work of these prominent Civil Engineers realizes a major goal: to serve as stewards of the public infrastructure and guardians of public health and safety."
Mr. Smith is a Resident Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District. He is recognized for innovative thinking and development of a knowledge based software library be used around the world by the Corps of Engineers. He is recognized as an outstanding instructor and guest lecturer in Construction Contract Administration and Schedule Management. A registered Professional Engineer, Mr. Smith holds engineering licenses for California, and Utah. Mr. Smith is a Captain and EMT on the Rescue Volunteer Fire Department and charter representative to a local Boy Scout Troop.
